Sustainability — Maluku Tour’s Environmental & Community Commitments

Our Sustainability & Community Impact Commitment

The Maluku Islands are a treasure of immense natural beauty and cultural richness. At Maluku Tour, we believe we have a profound responsibility—our ‘Tanggung Jawab’—to protect this fragile paradise for generations to come. Our commitment to sustainability is not an afterthought; it is woven into the very fabric of our operations, from our offices to our most remote expeditions. Our goal is to ensure that our presence is a positive force for conservation, community empowerment, and cultural preservation.

Environmental Responsibility

We are acutely aware of the environmental challenges facing remote archipelagos. Our policies are designed to minimize our footprint and actively contribute to conservation solutions.

  • Carbon Neutral Operations: We meticulously track and calculate the carbon emissions from all client and operational travel, including flights, boat journeys, and ground transport. We then offset 100% of these emissions by investing in verified carbon reduction projects in Indonesia, such as the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve in Borneo.
  • Marine Conservation Partnership: The Banda Sea is a global marine biodiversity hotspot. A percentage of the profit from every Maluku tour is donated directly to our conservation partners, including the Coral Triangle Center and WWF Indonesia, to support their marine protected area (MPA) management, reef monitoring, and anti-poaching efforts.
  • Zero Single-Use Plastics: We enforce a strict ban on single-use plastics across all our tours. Guests are provided with reusable water bottles and tote bags. We work with our hotel and boat partners to implement bulk-dispensing for amenities and to source provisions with minimal plastic packaging.
  • Waste Management Leadership: We go beyond simply ‘packing out what we pack in.’ We actively partner with local communities on islands like Banda and Saparua to fund and support waste collection and recycling initiatives, helping to address one of the region’s most pressing environmental issues.

Community Empowerment & Fair Partnership

Sustainable tourism must deliver tangible benefits to local people. We are committed to ensuring that the communities who call Maluku home are the primary beneficiaries of our operations.

  • Hyper-Local Employment: We are proud that over 90% of our on-the-ground team—including our guides, boat crews, drivers, and local liaisons—are hired directly from Maluku communities. This ensures authenticity for our guests and provides stable, meaningful employment where it is needed most.
  • Fair Wage & Benefits Guarantee: All our staff and the staff of our primary contractors are paid a wage that significantly exceeds the regional minimum wage (Upah Minimum Provinsi). We also ensure our full-time Indonesian staff are covered by national health (BPJS Kesehatan) and social security (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) insurance.
  • Direct Support for Local Enterprises: We prioritize partnerships with locally-owned businesses, from family-run guesthouses to independent boat captains. We provide training and support to help them meet international standards without losing their unique local character.
  • Cultural Preservation Fund: We contribute to a fund that supports cultural preservation projects, such as the maintenance of the Kedaton (Sultan’s Palace) in Ternate and the documentation of oral histories and traditions in the Lease Islands.

Our approach to sustainability is holistic and transparent. It is an integral part of our partner evaluation, as detailed in Our Methodology, and is championed by the experts on our team. We believe that a truly luxurious journey is one that enriches both the traveler and the destination.

Safeguarding Maluku’s Pristine Ecosystems

Imagine the kaleidoscopic coral gardens of the Kei Islands, teeming with life, or the ancient spice groves of Banda, whispering tales of centuries past. These are the wonders Maluku Tour is dedicated to preserving, extending our environmental responsibility far beyond carbon offsetting to embrace holistic ecosystem protection. Our commitment to Maluku’s unparalleled biodiversity manifests in tangible, on-the-ground actions. We strictly adhere to and promote “leave no trace” principles across all our expeditions, ensuring every footprint left is minimal. This includes rigorous waste management where all non-organic waste is sorted and transported out of remote areas for proper disposal, actively reducing plastic pollution. We champion the use of reusable water bottles and provide filtered water on all journeys, aiming
